Xunantunich
Let's Climb a Mayan City
Have you ever heard of a city within a village? Let’s take a journey to the West. Off we go to the second largest Archaeological site found in the Cayo District. Xunantunich, meaning Maiden of the rock, is situated across the Mopan River from the village of San Jose Succotz. This Site is easily accessible to visitors since it is just 15 minutes away from the main highway.
Have you ever been on a ferry? If you haven’t, then this is where your adventure begins. To get to Xunantunich, you must first ride on the hand cranked ferry. The cute little ferry holds two vehicles only. However, as small as it is, rest assured that the short little ride will be enjoyed. In the blink of an eye, you are now on the other side. The environment instantly changes as the trees become greener and the ambient becomes cooler.
Up you go, into the world of the intelligent Mayas. Join us on this two-hour tour as we explore Xunantunich’s six plazas surrounded by more than 26 temples and palaces. Let’s learn and be amazed as history takes a stroll on us. The jaw dropping view from atop “El Castillo,” the second tallest structure in Belize, will surely be a lifetime memory.
